Detox, Toxins and Your Liver - Taking the Mystery Out of Detox

Does anyone know what detox is?

Some people do, but there are a lot of misconceptions out there.

Detox

Just because things are coming out of your body, it doesn't mean you are detoxing

Detox, Toxins and Your Liver - Taking the Mystery Out of Detox

So many so-called detox products have laxatives in them. Taking laxatives, having more bowel movements, having diarrhea and getting 'cleaned out' is not detoxing anymore than vomiting or hemorrhaging is detoxing. (Sorry to be so blatant, but I want you to understand this.)

Detoxing bars of soap, face washes etc., etc.

Marketing gimmicks. That's all.

Detoxing shampoos.

There are shampoos that completely strip your hair of product build-up, remove chlorine from swimmer's hair and so on. Kind of like floor stripper. Taking product build-up and the like off your hair is good. But you are not detoxing anything. You don't need to detox your hair; hair is dead tissue once it leaves your scalp.

Detox is slang

The word detox is short for detoxification. Our body has naturally occurring pathways of detoxification. To detox or to detoxify is the verb that comes from this.

Wherefore art thou detox pathways?

In the liver. Our body's natural pathways of detoxification are located in the liver.

This is not an alternative health concept; look up p450 system in any physiology book (or on Wikipedia for that matter) and it will be there.

These pathways function 24 hours per day, 7 days per week in everyone, except in cases of genetic abnormalities and some liver disease, to put it very simply.

Where the alternative health industry steps in and confuses everyone

The idea of detoxing came from this:

Our liver's pathways of detoxification can only do so much - they are chemical pathways and like any chemical pathways they have a limit on how much they can do.

Many people have more toxins coming into their system than their liver can handle. Over the last few hundred years there has been a huge increase in pollution, chemicals on and in our food, pharmaceutical drug use and stress levels (a high stress level also causes our body to produce toxins).

Since this increase has been fairly rapid (in terms of evolution a few hundred years is practically nothing), our system has not correspondingly evolved.

That is, the amount of toxins coming into our body has drastically increased, but our capacity to detoxify them has not correspondingly increased.

So things get backed up. (I'm not taking about constipation here.) Think of it as a line up of toxins, waiting to get into the liver to be processed. Waiting and waiting.

Are toxins impatient? Is waiting a problem?

Yes they are and yes it is.

As they wait, they cause damage to tissues and cells.

They create free radicals that speed up aging and wrinkles.

They often get deposited in our tissues - organs, glands, muscles, fat cells. As they sit in our tissues, things in general just don't work as well.

All things being equal, all livers are not so equal

Some people have a liver that detoxifies much more effectively than others. This is just genetics.

Some things slow the liver detox pathways down

Eg. Sugar, alcohol, junk food, skipping meals, fasting (yes, fasting), stress, not enough vitamins and minerals.

Some things speed the liver detox pathways up and/or let them function properly

Eg. Fruits, vegetables, exercise, relaxation techniques, certain herbs, certain supplements.

At some point am I going to tell me what detoxing is versus what it isn't?

Yes; here you go:

Detoxing, in the alternative medicine sense of the word, is using any combination of herbs, supplements, dietary and lifestyle changes to maximize the efficiency of the liver's natural detoxification pathways in order to

(1) Get the backlog of toxins processed.

(2) Allow the body to take some of the toxins from the tissues and process those as well.

Once processed, the toxins can be safely eliminated through the kidneys and bowels.

Detox - Can Mucous Plaque Be Flushed Out?

Let us see what a detox means:

Simply put, a detox is way to clean the insides of your body to make it strong and healthy. There are many detox methods available today and there is one method in which western methods are combined with Chinese medicinal practices. The human body is also a natural detoxifying instrument. Health problems can be classified into two divisions, one is the congestion and the other deficiency. When we have are exposed to bad lifestyle and eating habits like coffee, alcohol, nicotine drugs and processed unhealthy foods, congestion occurs. We should not abuse our body like this as our bodies are needed for all purposes in life.

Detox

What is a herbal detox?

Detox - Can Mucous Plaque Be Flushed Out?

Ordinary detox programs are good enough but they might not be able to thoroughly cleanse our internal organs like kidneys, lymph, colon and liver. The use of herbal detox is easy as they can be done right from our homes. Herbs also contain vital ingredients like vitamins and minerals that are good for us. Herbs in combination with each other can pass on numerous benefits to our body and all round health. Our liver functions can also be strengthened with the use of certain specific herbs. Our bodies function non stop and the result of our metabolism is the urea we flush out in our urine.

Even the healthy can do detox as they can become healthier by a detox program. Even if one follows a good lifestyle, eats the correct food, drinks plenty of water and exercises regularly, he or she will still need to detox regularly because of the environmental pollution around us. Toxins bombard our bodies' everyday, so it is better if we detox once in a way.

What is mucous plaque?

Mucous plaque is a coating that forms on our intestine walls that has a rubbery feel to it. This coating is formed due to the accumulation of toxins. Even if our bodies are healthy, the mucous plaque still forms in the intestines. The mucous plaque prevents the proper assimilation of essential nutrients in our bodies. This causes skin problems, constipation, migraines and lowered metabolism. Mucous plaque can be eliminated by the use of a detox program.

In a detox diet, meat and diary products are avoided and vegetables, fruits and water are recommended to be taken. The detox diet can last up to a week in time. The dieter can switch back to normal food gradually once the detox program is over. The detox diet lays emphasis on laying off on all processed unhealthy foods. The detox diet flushes out all present toxins inside the body. All important organs like the kidneys, liver, lungs, colon and the lymphatic system can be cleaned by a good detox system. The toxins are flushed out through our urine, excreta and sweat.

There are tow very simple detox methods like sauna and steam. How does sauna and steam help us in detoxifying our bodies? It is done by heating our body temperature, which in turn speeds up our circulation and also reduces muscular pain and also gives us great looking skin. This is mainly done through our perspiration. There is also belief in certain quarters that sauna and steam even flushes our sweat away through our sweat.

Detox: 3 Enemas to Use With Your Detox Plan

An enema is the way of putting fluid into the rectum or back passage through the anus to cleanse the large intestine or bowel. It is probably the most controversial and disputed procedure to include in a detox plan .

For centuries, enemas were routinely done in homes and prescribed by medicine men and doctors for all sorts of ailments but in more recent times their regular use for health has largely died out. Although disposable enemas are still frequently used for severe constipation and they are used by doctors before colon X-rays, bowel surgery and childbirth.

Detox

It is often claimed that the use of enemas is not natural but history tells us that people in most regions of the world have discovered the use of enemas. American Indians made crude enema kits from an animal bladder and a hollow leg bone. Pre-Columbian South Americans are credited with the invention of the first rubber enema bag and tubes.

Detox: 3 Enemas to Use With Your Detox Plan

What do enemas do?

Enemas help release the waste that is in the colon. The longer toxic waste stays in the bowel the more chance there is that toxins are reabsorbed into the body making you feel ill and weak. The use of enemas during an intensive detox will help clear out toxins much more quickly. They are especially useful to help relieve detox reactions or a healing crisis. Coffee enemas can stimulate the liver to discharge more toxins and bile.

Any change of diet can bring about a change in your bowel habits and it's not uncommon for bowels to slow down during a detox diet or juice fast. Juice fasting or feasting does not supply fiber to keep the bowels moving so the use of enemas or other means of cleansing the colon is important to get the toxins out.

What to put in an enema?

Many different types of solutions have been used for enemas from plain water to herbs, green soap, coffee, Bentonite clay and Epsom Salts. Here are three good enemas to use on a detox diet.

Bentonite Clay

Bentonite has a negative charge which attracts positively charged toxins like a magnet and removes them from the bowel. Mix 2 oz. to 4 oz of Bentonite Clay into 1 quart (2 pints/1 liter) warm filtered water just slightly hotter than body temperature.

Epsom Salts

Epsom Salts is probably best known as a laxative. Epsom Salts is magnesium sulphate which draws water into the bowel and helps to flush it. It can make a nice detox bath too.  Use 2 tablespoons Epsom salts for each quart or liter of pure water.

Coffee

Coffee enemas are probably the most controversial although they are central to the Gerson Therapy and the Kelly and Gonzales detox programs for cancer. They are often ridiculed by main stream medicine and bear the brunt of numerous jokes although they were apparently mentioned in the older editions of the Merck Manual, a handbook for medical physicians.

The caffeine stimulates the liver and gall bladder to discharge bile. Toxins that the liver has neutralized are eliminated in the bile so increasing the bile helps to detoxify the body. Substances known as palmitates in coffee have been shown to stimulate glutahione-S-transferase the enzymes that aid liver detox. The coffee also has a stimulating effect on the bowel and is great for increasing the flushing effect.

They can make you feel good and can be overused which causes mineral imbalances.  To prevent this you should have at least 3 x 8 oz glasses of juice for every coffee enema. One enema a day during juice fasting or a detox diet is usually sufficient. If you are are sensitive to caffeine try a mixture of half coffee and half chamomile tea or make the coffee half strength.

How to make a coffee enema

Bring a quart (liter) of distilled or pure water to a gentle boil in a pan and add three rounded  tablespoons of organic filter ground coffee.  Allow to boil for 3 minutes and then cover and simmer on low heat for a further 15 minutes. Strain through fine muslin and allow to cool to body temperature before using.

It can take practice to hold it in for 10 or 15 minutes. If you have trouble holding it you can just try a small amount and release it when you have to and then try again. Repeat this until you have used all the solution. You might find it easier to clear your bowel first with a plain water enema. Next time you go on a detox or do a juice fast try an enema and see what difference it makes.

Detox - Challenge Yourself to a Fruit & Vegetable Detox

There are many healthful benefits to a fruit and vegetable detox. Nutritionists recommend eating at least five servings per day in order to improve your health and reduce the risk of certain diseases such as cancer and heart disease. One of the best ways to accomplish this is with a fruit and vegetable detox.

You can challenge yourself to have a healthier lifestyle by changing some of your eating habits. For example, when you get the urge to snack, replace potato chips with raw vegetables. Replace that caffeine and calorie laden soda with fresh fruit or vegetable juice. Eat a salad for lunch instead of the fast food combo meal.

Detox

Before you know it, you are participating in a fruit and vegetable detox diet that will improve your health and restore your body's natural detoxification process.

Detox - Challenge Yourself to a Fruit & Vegetable Detox

Years of unhealthy eating habits have contributed to a build up of harmful substances in the body that are not easily removed through the natural detox process. You may be experiencing loss of sleep, anxiety, loss of energy and weight gain as a result.

A fruit and vegetable detox which includes raw and unprocessed foods will cleanse your body and help to improve your sleep, bowel movements and build a resistance to diseases.

A rich diet of almost any type of fruit that is fresh or frozen and full of fiber is much better than eating junk food. Apples, bananas, pears, lemons, raisins, pineapple, mango, kiwi and melons are just a few sources that you can eat to detox your body. Some of the best vegetables are carrots, turnips, cabbage, tomatoes, broccoli Brussels sprouts and green leaves.

The importance of fiber for your digestive system cannot be stressed enough. Scientific studies have repeatedly shown the lasting benefits of a fruit and vegetable detox. The following list describes the importance of eating more fruits and vegetables.

  • Fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk for stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.
  • Fruits and vegetables can reduce your risk of getting type 2 diabetes.
  • Eating fruits and vegetables which contain lots of potassium will decrease bone loss and the development of kidney stones.
  • Protection against stomach and colon cancers with a fruit and vegetable diet.
  • Fruits and vegetables are a low calorie way to maintain a healthy weight and body mass index.

A fruit and vegetable detox diet should not be seen as merely a weight loss fad, but rather as a way of life. Once you see and feel the difference in your body and the improved performance of your digestive system, eating the right foods will become more than a habit. It will become a way of life.

Detox - 6 Golden Rules For a Successful Summer Detox

Although we tend to think of detox in January after the heavy food and excesses of winter and the holiday season summer is an ideal time to detox. When the weather is warmer it is so much easier to follow the detox diet of plenty of fruit and fresh salads and leave the heavy stodgy hard to digest food behind.

By following a 7 - 14 day detox plan that focuses on nutrient packed fresh foods close to their natural state and avoiding processed foods laden with sugar, fat, salt and artificial additives you will allow your body to function more efficiently.

Detox

There is no need to starve yourself or go hungry. By eating food that is packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber you will feel much more satisfied and still be able to shed those extra pounds. Restricted diets slow down your metabolism.

Detox - 6 Golden Rules For a Successful Summer Detox

6 Golden Rules for a Successful Summer Detox.

1. Cut out the Junk

Avoid fast foods, processed foods, ready meals, salty snacks, fizzy drinks, high fat foods, foods high in sugar like cookies, chocolate, cakes, and most ready made desserts. These foods often contain artificial additives that poison your body. They lack vitamins, minerals and fiber that your body needs for the detox system to function efficiently. Limit red meat and dairy products as they are often contain hormones and antibiotic residues.

2. Feast on Fresh Whole Foods

Eating foods in their natural state will provide your body with high levels of nutrients that will support your body's detoxification system improving your health. Food starts to loose its nutrients once it is stored so look for fruit and vegetables that are in season and not imported. Organically produced food has more nutrients and taste and no toxic pesticides.

3. Eat a High Raw Diet.

Many vitamins and minerals are lost from food by cooking. It is easy to eat a high raw fruit and vegetable diet on a summer detox by juicing your fruit and vegetables or making them into smoothies, uncooked blended soups and salads.

Some foods need to be cooked to make them more palatable and easier to digest and steaming them lightly will help to retain their nutrients better than boiling them. You can stir-fry food in a little liquid instead of heating oil to a high temperature which will damage it and create toxic substances.

Living salads and sprouted seeds and beans are readily available in many supermarkets and whole food markets and stores.

4. Rehydrate.

Your body contains a high proportion of water and needs enough pure water to function efficiently.

Tap water is usually high in chlorine, fluoride and drug residue which are detrimental to health use filtered water. A glass of pure water with the juice of half an organic lemon is a good cleansing drink first thing in the morning.

Replace coffee and regular tea with fruit and vegetable juices, herbal or fruit teas. Green tea is high in antioxidants but still contains caffeine so avoid drinking too many cups. Aim to have 6 - 8 glasses of fluid a day and more in hot weather or when you exercise.

5. Essential Exercise.

Exercise helps the blood and lymph circulate to all the organs to take them nutrients and collect the wastes to be eliminated via the detox organs. Daily brisk walking, or rebounding is essential. Swimming in chlorine free pools, and running at least 4 times a week is beneficial.

Don't forget to brush your skin daily with a natural bristle brush to help with lymph circulation and make your skin glow.

6. Avoid Re-tox.

Look for natural personal care products to reduce the toxic chemicals that are absorbed from your skin. Buy natural household cleaning products that do not pollute the environment. Many are highly toxic when inhaled.

Although you won't get rid of a lifetime of toxins during a 7 or 14 day detox it will help to make you more aware of what you are putting into your body and learn to become attuned to what it really needs. If you stick to the principles of a healthy detox diet you will feel good and look good and dramatically improve your health.

Detox - How to Know If You Need to Detox

Do you need to detox? Consider this: we live on a poisoned planet. The air we breathe is full of automobile and manufacturing emissions. The water we drink and bathe in is chlorinated and fluoridated, and the toxins from the plastics all around us are harming us. And that's just the beginning. Our poisoned planet is poisoning US.

Yes, it's depressing. But the reality is that even if we eat perfectly healthful diets (which we don't), our bodies get toxic. Toxic, as in, poisoned...to a degree. That's because lots of the stuff that goes into us (like from plastics, for example) our bodies can't get rid of. They just were not created to deal with these unnatural things. So, our bodies store them, locked away. But they're not truly locked away, no. They cause our bodies to develop dis-ease: to not function right. To not feel well.

Detox

Do you feel well? Do you have as much energy as you should?

Detox - How to Know If You Need to Detox

I have an electric teapot. It boils water very quickly. It comes in handy. I also have very hard mineral containing tap water. (It's less when I use my filtered water, but it's still there. And no, I'm not advising folks to drink tap water! ) After several days of use, the teapot gets a hard white film on the bottom of it. I can swish some of it away, but if I don't do anything about it, it will continue to grow. Until one day I heat up water for some herbal tea, pour it in my cup, and see gross flakes of white stuff floating around. Yuck.

So, I need to clean that stuff off. Break it up, dissolve it. I pour some white vinegar on it and let it sit for an hour and presto! It's gone. Just like that. Of course, it will build up again, but I know how to clean it.

The same concept applies to many things. If you want to have a house you enjoy, you must declutter it. If you want a kitchen without bugs, you must clean it. And if you want a body that feels good and works well, you must detoxify it. All things must get cleaned and maintained to work properly. What's more important than taking care of your body so that you can feel good and have good health?

How do you know whether or not you need to detox? It's quite simple. If you're sick, you need to detox. If you feel great but know you don't eat as healthfully as you should, you need to detox. And if you feel great, eat a perfect diet, but live anywhere near plastic, EMF's or basically anywhere on this planet, you need to detox.

Remember that your body simply was not built to deal with the things it encounters in today's world. Every so often you can "give it a good scrub," and it will feel great.

You don't have to be a "health nut" in order to consider doing a detox; my entire family (including young children) recently participated in a gentle detox program. A combination of diet modification and supplements is all that is needed. And changing your diet alone can do great things.

Think about it.

Detox - Can Our Internal Organs Be Cleaned?

Herbal cleansing is a good way of detoxifying your body, which is mild and comfortable to use. Use of natural herbs and plants in a detox procedure helps in avoiding any unwanted side effects of a detox procedure. Researchers agree that herbal detox is one of the safest ways to detoxify your body.

The ability of the human body to clean itself gets eroded due to the excess build up of toxins in the body. Having nutritious foods and taking extra supplementation will go a long way in addressing the problem of toxin build up in the body. Though the role of herbal supplements is a matter of debate, it is well worth a try.

Detox

The kidneys, intestines, liver, lungs and colon can all be cleaned by the use of herbal detox. Herbal detoxes are safe and very cost effective with little or no visible side effects.
There are many herbal detox products that can be got today in the form of capsules and pills. There are also herbal teas and juices available, which can be mixed instantly with water to detox the internal organs.

Detox - Can Our Internal Organs Be Cleaned?

Herbal teas are very good in that they are very mild and do not cause much discomfort to the drinker. These teas are not only good cleansers but also act as stimulants and restore your energy levels.

Herbal detoxification of the colon

The colon is the passage way through which the majority of toxins are eliminated from the body. Cleansing the colon first is of prime importance in any detox program. Herbal detox can be used in cleaning the colon, not only because of its effectiveness but also because it is very mild in nature. The herbal detox products lay stress on the use of laxative agents as its ingredients, as the colon has to be kept clean and the digestive tract free from any residual toxins. Psyllium is a good colon cleanser.

Herbal detoxification of the liver

The liver is responsible for ensuring continuous supply of nutrients to the rest of the body and also ensuring the assimilation of all nutrients from the foods we eat. Hence the cleaning of the liver is of primary importance to maintain a healthy state of the body. Some of the herbal detox products used in the cleaning of the liver include burdock, dandelion and gentian.

Herbal detoxification of the kidneys and lymph

The lymphatic system is responsible for carrying toxic waste to the kidneys or liver from where they will be flushed out through the colon. Cleavers, Goldenseal and Echinacea are some of the good lymph cleansers.

Kidneys are very important in that, they ensure the supply of good clean blood to all the other parts of the body. It is very important to keep the kidneys clean, so as to enable it to discharge its duties effectively. Hydrangea root and birch tea are some effective kidney cleansers.

A good detox diet will have herbal ingredients that are safe, effective and that give longer beneficial results for a healthy life.

How Often Should One Detoxify?

Ancient eastern cultures have always used detoxification as a way to keep the body and mind clean. These cultures use steam and mineral pools to aid in the detoxification process.
Today detoxification takes many forms. There is a wide variety of programs to choose from.

Herbal detox programs can be very effective in cleansing the body of harmful toxins. These herbal programs act as a diuretic to clean toxins through the kidneys. Others detox through the colon while another cleanses the lymph system. These types of cleanses can be used often, but must be accompanied by drinking plenty of water to aid in the eliminating of the toxins. A schedule of detox might follow the seasons. Many European doctors recommend a cleanse at the change of the seasons.

Detox

When doing a detox program, expect to see improvements in several systems of the body. The digestive process will improve as well as bowel function. Weight loss will be a pleasant side effect of a good detox program. Herbal detox teas are a great way to keep the body cleansed. They can be used daily as a way to regulate the bowels and, depending on the tea, keep the minerals balanced in the body. Some teas are good blood purifiers, while others are alkaline in nature and help in digestion.

How Often Should One Detoxify?

When choosing a detox program, one should seek help from a person who is educated in the field of cleansing. They can give advice as to the program that suits your desired effects.

Detoxing will prove to be valuable in maintaining good health and a great feeling of well being.

How Often Should One Detoxify?

It's true the Master Cleanse is the best detox diet and can help you lose up to 20 pounds, look younger, ease chronic pain, cleanse your body of internal waste, and boost your energy levels in 10 days!

Detox - Does It Improve Your Skin?

The answer is yes, especially if you have problem skin. The skin is one of the body's main organs and can eliminate around 10% of all waste from the body. It does this mainly through sweating, we lose moisture through the skin 24/7 even though we're not aware of it. It's a natural process and of course your facial skin is included in this.

So what is detoxification (detox)? To put it very simply it's "getting the garbage (toxins) out of your body without putting any more in". Toxins can be heavy metals, pesticides, too much vitamin A or chemical residues from the polluted air we breathe or the junk food we eat, which contains sugar salt, artificial colors and flavors.

Detox

All these are stored mainly in the fatty tissues of the body and can play havoc with your health if they build up to excess or if you have a sensitivity.

Detox - Does It Improve Your Skin?

If you suffer with acne, or if your skin is dull, rough or blotchy, a detox could be exactly what you need. Other symptoms of toxic overload can be lethargy and frequent headaches or simply feeling below par. Detoxing will not only help your skin but the other major elimination organ, the liver. In fact your whole system will benefit!

There are as many detox methods as weight loss diets and some of them can be quite expensive! But we don't need to spend a lot of money on detox, it's something we can do ourselves if we know how. So to that end, I'll give you a really simple (& cheap!) detox that you can try.

Detox a la Wendy!

We are aiming here to rid the body of garbage therefore it's important to make the diet as light and healthy as possible but to have something you can live with for at least 2 weeks. It's no good going on a herbal tea and brown rice diet if you can only do it for two days!

So, to give you some ideas, substitute fish for meat, cut out alcohol, substitute herbal tea for coffee and tea, Cut out rich sauces and all fatty foods, eliminate salt and cut out all foods made with white flour. Yes it sounds painful but put your imagination to work, there are a lot of healthy foods you can substitute with.

Keep up the vegies, try serving them sprinkled with herbs or baking them in a quiche without pastry. Try pumpkin seeds as a snack, they're lovely sprinkled over cereal. Go to a health food shop or even the health section of your supermarket and do some research.

If you have digestive problems, a good detox for you may be cutting out all dairy and wheat products. Try soy milk or rice milk and breads made out of other flours such as rye, rice and soy flours.

Always take in some form of fiber to help elimination. Psyllium is great as it does not cause any food allergies. Start with just one teaspoon and if that causes no bloating or discomfort, increase it gradually.

Think water. It can be spring water, bottled water, filtered or rain water. If your domestic supply is ok, tap water is fine too. Herbal teas are great but read the label, some of them can be quite potent! Fruit and vegetable juices are fantastic but have them instead of a meal, not as an extra. Some of them are quite high in kilojoules.

Some people take supplements when they are detoxing, others don't. I like to take a herb called "milk thistle". It helps the liver to cleanse and heal.

Rapid detoxification can make you feel quite sick and can happen if you jump too quickly into detox from a bad diet loaded with fat sugar and chemical colors and flavors. Try to eliminate the bad foods first and go onto a healthier diet before attempting detox. However if you get mild headaches or experience drowsiness, try to stick with it. It's a sign that you body is eliminating those toxins.

Skin brushing (or dry brushing) can aid the detox process, use a loofah or natural bristle brush and starting from the hands brush the skin gently. Always start from the extremities and work towards the heart or centre of your body. Skin brushing will aid your circulation, remove dead skin cells and make you feel rejuvenated.

Exercise will also help. Exercising will make the body sweat, speeding up the elimination of toxic wastes. No need to run a marathon, do what you enjoy but do it regularly.

You may find your skin will get worse before it gets better, but soon you'll see a clearer more radiant complexion. Acne will improve, your eyes will look clearer and, as a bonus, you may find your appetite decreases and sugar cravings diminish.

Pregnant women should consult their doctor before attempting detox. Young children or sick people should not radically alter their diet in any way. Seek medical advice first.

Just as a thought. It's better to be on a healthy diet most of the time than be on a bad diet and detoxing regularly. It's what we do every day that counts the most. Try to use this detox time to re think your eating habits and lifestyle choices.

How to Detox - Homemade Skin Care

Learning how to detox can help you achieve optimum health. What is detoxification? It's a process of clearing out toxins and chemicals, from the body, to regain energy levels and overall improved health. On a daily basis, our bodies are attacked with toxins from a variety of sources including: industrial fumes, exhaust fumes, pollutants, tobacco, alcohol, food additives, tobacco, prescription drugs, harmful chemicals, obesity, stress and other contributing factors. Don't waste your money on expensive detox powders, drinks, juices or supplements. You can detox with a simple change of dietary habits and easy health care routines. Discover easy ways to detox at home for beautiful skin!

ANTIOXIDANT FOODS

Detox

Change your poor eating habits. Eliminate or, at least, reduce your intake of alcohol, refined sugar, saturated fats, coffee and tobacco from your diets. These toxic obstacles will slow down the detox process. Instead, eat a healthy portion of antioxidant foods. Colorful fruits and vegetables with vitamins A, C, E and beta-carotene have high concentrations of antioxidants. Foods such as: carrots, oranges, spinach, apples, strawberries, snow peas, green peppers, tomatoes, and broccoli are some healthy foods with antioxidants benefits. There are many more antioxidant foods!

How to Detox - Homemade Skin Care

ANTIOXIDANT DRINKS

Stay away from drinks with a high sugar content. Look for 100% natural fruit juices or make your own, freshly squeezed, homemade juices. Pomegranate juice has loads of antioxidants. It's a very heart healthy drink! Other good antioxidant drinks include: grape juice, blueberry juice, black cherry juice, cranberry juice, orange juice, apple juice, white tea and green tea. Incorporating an antioxidant drink into your daily routine can be very convenient for those with busy schedules.

Drink water and flush those toxins out! The Mayo Clinic suggest the "8 x 8" average rule. The skin is comprised of cells containing water. If it doesn't receive the proper amount of water, it can become tight, dry, flaky, less resilient, prone to wrinkling, develop acne, blemishes and show signs of other poor skin conditions. If you are trying to get rid of blackheads, blemishes or acne and notice a worsened effect from drinking water, don't worry, this enhanced condition is only temporary. The toxins have built up over time and are now being flushed out of the skin. Acne break-outs will become less likely to occur once the toxins are purged from the skin.

WARNING! Do not drink too much water. Drinking too much water can cause mild to severe health concerns and even death. It can burden your circulatory system causing too much stress on your heart and kidneys. It can cause Hyponatremia, having too little sodium in the blood. It can cause a mild to severe headache and inter-cranial pressure.

DETOX DIET WARNING!

Be careful if you're on a "detox diet". Detox diets may not be for everyone. They're not recommended for normal or active teenagers, those with diabetes, heart disease or chronic medical conditions. Detox diets should be avoided if you are pregnant or have an eating disorder. Detox supplements can have side effects. Many supplements are laxatives causing dehydration, mineral imbalances and digestive problems. In addition, fasting can cause a slow metabolic rate. Do not stop eating from any major food group without talking to your health care provider.

Be smart. Look for detox diet recipes with, nutritious, antioxidant foods. Check your local bookstores for detox diet cook books. These cook books are available online too. If you read consumer recommendations before purchasing online, this may help you decide if a certain cook book may be better for you than another.

DRY SKIN BRUSHING

Dry skin brushing has been used throughout the world for centuries. This gentle and effective process stimulates lymph canals and nerve endings, boosts blood circulation, sheds dead skin cells, improves skin texture, increases skin cell renewal, eliminates clogged pores and more! Dry skin brushing is a powerful way to cleanse the lymphatic system. Skin brushing stimulates the release of waste material from cells near the surface of the body. Eventually, most of the toxins, with their carrier cells, find their way to the colon for elimination. Dry skin brushing cleanses the skin without removing the protective acid mantle. Skin can tighten, show a reduction in cellulite and have an overall radiant, youthful, appearance. Many beauty salons use dry skin brushing as part of their program.

Use a non-synthetic, all-natural, vegetable fiber brush. The synthetic fiber brushes can irritate skin. Brushes come in short or long handle types. Long handle brushes are more convenient for can hard to reach places, like your back. Dry brushes are meant to be used, dry, even though there are some brushes you can use wet. Before your bath or shower, brush skin in continuous strokes from your outer extremities to the center of your body. Start at the soles of the feet. CAUTION! Avoid brushing rashes, wounds, cuts, infections, poison oak, poison ivy or broken areas of skin. Do not dry brush the face, breast nipples, or any sensitive area of the body. Use delicate, light, strokes around the area of the breasts.

Next, take a warm shower or bath and a cool rinse to invigorate blood circulation, then dry off well. Afterwards, you may want to massage your skin with natural plant oils including: coconut, almond, avocado, sesame, sunflower or apricot oil. It all depends on your preference.

Clean your brush, at least, once a week with soap and water. Try not to get the wood too wet, when cleaning. Wet wood may lead to warping. Store your brush in a dry, open, sunny, spot to avoid the formation of mold and mildew.

DETOX BATH

Extended immersion time, in hot water, eliminates toxins through perspiration and through lymphatic drainage. It stimulates blood circulation and promotes skin cell renewal. Detox with a steam bath, sauna, spa, or in a tub of hot water at home! Bath salts can help cleanse, exfoliate, detoxify and soften skin. Bath salts with regular sea salts, Dead Sea salts, goat milk and MSM, (methylsulfonymethane), are especially effective. MSM is a natural, organic, non-toxic, odorless white crystal. It looks just like table sugar. MSM is a powerful detoxifying ingredient! MSM allows water and nutrients to flow freely into cells while allowing wastes and toxins to flow out. MSM benefits for skin care include: reduces inflammation, alleviates painful arthritis, alleviates muscle or joint pain, reduces scar tissue, detoxifies the body, increases blood circulation, reduces appearance of wrinkles and assist in healing small wounds.

Soaking in a tub with commercial or homemade bath salts allows a process of osmosis to facilitate the exchange of toxins from inside the body for needed minerals dissolved in the water. Commercial or homemade bath salts can be unscented or have aromatherapy benefits.

FACE CREAM with GREEN TEA

Look for a commercial or homemade face cream with natural extracts, including: rosemary, cucumber, allantoin, Roman chamomile, cornflower and green tea! Green tea, especially, is a powerful antioxidant. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. It rejuvenates skin, reduces swelling, prevents sun damage, increases elasticity, tones and protects.

EXERCISE

Most of us live busy lives but a regular exercise routine can: tones muscles, increase oxygen and nutrients to cells, remove body toxins and improve digestion. It's important that you don't over work your system with too much stress or strain. Learn how to pace yourself. For example, when walking, aim for about thirty minutes a day, at least three days a week, at a comfortable invigorating pace.

RELAX & BREATHE

Deep breathing occurs by contracting the diaphragm, a muscle located between the chest and stomach cavities. It's different than shallow or chest breathing. Deep breathing exercises helps to burn fat, stimulate metabolism, increase energy, reduce stress, reduce anxiety, reduce blood pressure, strengthen abdominal and intestinal muscles, remove harmful toxins and relieve general aches and pains. It allows a release of endorphins throughout the body. The upward and downward motion of the diaphragm increases blood flow and helps to remove toxins.

Yoga therapy is as a way of learning how to control deep breathing. This ancient India discipline is known for its mental, physical and spiritual insights. It's known for having an overall, calming, relaxing, soothing effect on the body. You don't have to take Yoga to breathe deeply, though. People breathe deeply even while sleeping. If you can, try to pay more attention as to how you are breathing throughout a day. Most shallow breathers remain unaware of their condition.

BE SMART

Be smart when detoxifying your body. Choose nutritious, healthful, antioxidant foods and drinks. Become more aware of ingredients in your commercial or homemade skin care products. Make time to get active and move your body! Relax and take a deep breathe, now and then. Your body is, already, designed to purify itself!

Detox Patches - Are They A Scam Or Do They Really Work?

The latest health fad is the use of detox patches to clear the body of poisons and toxins. While many people believe these patches work and clear out toxins as they are advertised to do, the science behind the patches is questionable.

For those not familiar with the product, detox patches are basically an absorbent pad with adhesive around the edges that can be stuck to the body. The patches are filled with powdered ingredients such as bamboo vinegar, wood vinegar and mushrooms, which are supposed to draw the toxins out of the body onto the pad. The user puts on a clean white pad on the affected body part, sleeps eight hours with it in place, then removes the pad the next morning to find it filled with a gunky black sludge that is supposed to be the toxins pulled from the body by the pad.

Detox

While the pads can be placed in any location on the body, they are most frequently used on the feet. This is in accordance with the study of reflexology which states each organ system in the body corresponds to a zone on the feet. By placing these detox patches on the feet; they are supposed to stimulate these zones, thus causing each organ system to release its toxins.

Detox Patches - Are They A Scam Or Do They Really Work?

While I am not an expert on the subject the way these detox patches are supposed to work is highly reminiscent of the foot spa scam of several years ago. People were reportedly going to spas where they would have their feet soaked in a tub of salt water charged with a slight electrical charge. Like the detox patches, this soak was also supposed to pull the toxins out of the body. To most people, the practice seemed to work because the soaking water would turn dark as their feet soaked. As time went by, however, we learned it wasn't actually the toxins at all that made the water dark, some say it was rust coming from the metal electrodes after they were placed in the water, while other think it was some sort of chemical reaction. At any rate, no toxins were actually being pulled from the feet.

Anyone with even a basic knowledge of biology will tell you that poisons and toxins cannot be pulled or drawn through the skin by anything. While some nutrients are passed through the skin via the pores, the skin is generally impermeable to most other substances. It also doesn't make sense that putting a patch on the feet would cause all of the toxins in the body to be pulled to the feet overnight. This goes against the way science has proven that the body works. Even if the detox patches did have some power to pull toxins and poisons out of the body's cells, these toxins would enter the bloodstream where they would be filtered out by the liver and kidneys and excreted as urine.

If you are looking for a quick and easy way to detox, remember, nothing quick and easy is worth doing. If you are serious about cleaning your body of toxins, detox patches are not a good choice.

Detox, What Can I Expect?

So you've decided to admit yourself to a treatment program for your alcohol and/or drug problem. You may be nervous in not knowing what may happen while you're there. You may be anxious about what might happen during the detox. Concern and apprehension are absolutely normal.

Some of you have experienced the uncomfortable feelings, physically and emotionally, that are associated with detox. Some of you have never tried detox through a professional facility or by yourself. So what happens during this important time?

Detox

Everyone is different when it's time to detox, though there are some common things you can expect to happen. The first two or three days will be uncomfortable as your body detoxifies itself. You may sweat profusely, have shaking or trembling in your hands and legs. You may sleep some, a lot, or barely at all. Your dreams may seem overly vivid and real or you may not dream at all. You may experience bouts of nausea and loose bowels. You can count on flu-like symptoms like a low-grade fever, flushed skin, aches and pains which will more than likely make you restless and irritable.

Detox, What Can I Expect?

There are ways to alleviate some of these symptoms like hot baths or showers to sweat out the toxins, gentle music to quiet your mind, easy exercise routines, lots of liquids, vitamins or vitamin drinks to restore any deficiencies and anything else that will help make the detox easier. Nobody likes going through detox but it is a necessary process on the path to healthier living and well being.

If you are an alcoholic or a problem drinker, the alcohol in your system will not leave overnight. For someone who has drank heavily and consistently for a while can expect a total detox from 90 to 180 days. But don't let this alarm you. Alcohol has the innate ability of storing itself in the fatty cells of your body and will release itself, off and on, throughout that 90 to 180 day period. During that time, you may have sudden urges or cravings to drink. This is normal. If you are attending the appropriate aftercare meetings like Alcoholics Anonymous, you will have a support group of friends and a sponsor to help you through those uncomfortable times. Overall, you may not notice most of detox process. The initial detox that you will be aware of may last from just a few days to a week or two which will be done in the safety and comfort of the treatment facility. Compared to other drugs, alcohol leaves the body quickly and the initial detox is relatively short.

If you are a drug addict and depending on the drug you use and how much you use it, you can expect most of the same that an alcoholic would experience in detox. Some drugs do stay in the body longer than others. For instance, Marijuana can be in your bloodstream up to 30 days. Drugs like methamphetamine and cocaine usually stay in the body from 3 to 7 days. Each detox will be little different than the other.

No matter which drug or drink you use, the choice to enter a treatment facility and get help is the best thing you can do for yourself and those around you. The detoxification process is nothing compared to the continued emotional torture and physical pain of alcoholism and drug addiction. Everyday spent continuing to drink or use drugs gets a little worse. Everyday in detox and recovery get a little better than the day before it. Which one are you going to choose today?

You will require:

  • Astragalus capsules,
  • Dandelion leaf capsules,
  • Apple pectin,
  • Psyllium husk powder fiber,
  • Distilled water
  • Cranberry Juice (must be pure 100% juice with no added sugar).

Take four parts of distilled water and one part of cranberry juice . You have to add a tea spoon of apple pectin and a teaspoon of psyllium fiber to this mix. Now you have to stir together the whole mixture so that it turns into a homogenous drink and you can take this drink before breakfast or after waking up, on an empty stomach.

And as I mentioned just now, nuts, grains, fibrous food items etc are the only things that you can consume during this period. Then you have to prepare another second cup of the juice just in the method mentioned above and you have to drink this second cup of cranberry juice just 10 minutes before consuming your lunch or dinner. You should avoid of all kinds of processed food items, dairy products and meat. Instead eat fruits and veggies, preferably organic.

While you are on this detox, in the 1st week, you have to consume 2 capsules of dandelion leaves two or three times daily. It will clean out your bowels and your colon as it is a mild diuretic. During the second week replace the dandelion capsules with Astragalus capsules to cleanse the lymphatic system.

You have to follow these steps each and every day for 2 weeks. To get an extra burst of pectin, you can munch on organic apples day in and day out. Whatever toxins are in your body will be bound by the pectin and they will get flushed out easily. You can add bulk to the stool by drinking psyllium fiber and this will facilitate easy movement of bowel and bowel clearance.

During the third week you can gradually cut back on the psyllium husk powder and pectin and start to introduce a little free range meat and low fat organic dairy products. Your body will be detoxified. Now you know how to detox using cranberry juice.

Alcohol Detox at Home

Alcohol detox at home can be done, but never by yourself. There must be medical oversight because everyone's withdrawal symptoms are different and unknown until they are into the process itself. In-home detox is not set up to handle patients who are at risk for seizures or strokes. Most programs will only allow low-risk, relatively healthy patients to attempt detox at home.

All patients are overseen by medical staff. Someone is always at the patient's home during the detox process, which can last anywhere from three to seven days. Depending on the home detox program, the person who stays with the recovering alcoholic could be a friend or family member, with the medical personnel making daily visits and always available by phone. Other detox programs have the medical personnel staying at your home.

Detox

Home detox is much less expensive than in-patient detox. Rather than paying for your share of a stay in a treatment facility as well as keep your home operating, you're just paying for your home, like normal.

Alcohol Detox at Home

Each person is evaluated for their suitability for in-home detox from alcohol before this program starts. There are usually questionnaires and/or interviews. At that point the addict's suitability for in-home detox from alcohol will be determined. A plan for healthy, safe and effective detox will be prepared and discussed with the patient.

There are many products on the internet promising virtual "detox in a box" or "all-natural detox at home". However, none of these are recommended by physicians. In fact, they're primarily set up to help people using drugs or alcohol pass drug screening by employers and others. If you can find these products on the internet, don't you think they employers can, too?

In-home alcohol detoxification can also be used before an inpatient or outpatient treatment program begins. When the individual arrives at the treatment facility, the recovery phase can begin straightaway.

During the in-home alcohol detox, a medical professional, usually a nurse, will arrive at your house. They usually wear street clothes, so as far as your neighbors are concerned, you just have a friend visiting. The medical expert will have already seen your evaluation and will have come prepared to treat you according to your special needs.

Medications are administered, vital signs checked, and the detoxification process has begun. For the detox to be most effective, it must be followed up by recovery. Many of the medical staff who guide the recovering alcoholic through the home detox process will also begin the long-term recovery process at the same time.

Alcohol detox is the first step in the recovery process. Detoxing at home, under medical supervision, can be a safe and confidential method of beginning a new life of sobriety. But even at home, it's critical that the alcohol detox process only be done under competent medical supervision.

Colon Cleanse - How to Detox in 30 Days Through a Natural Colon Cleanse Therapy?

A colon cleanse process is imperative if you wish to maintain good health. Even before we discuss the uses of a colon cleanse procedure, we need to first understand what it really means. Colon cleansing is a process through which your intestinal tract is cleansed of all the accumulated toxins. Let us now discuss how you can naturally detoxify your body in less than 30 days.

Make Use Of A Well Known Colon Cleanser

Cleanse

The first step to cleansing your body is by choosing a natural therapy. Your colon tends to get infected owing to your ill eating habits. Junk food and colas are the biggest causes of fecal matter being blocked in your intestinal tract. Waste products such as fecal matter, can block your intestines for years. This can cause severe stomach ailments, such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, gas, bloating of the stomach and flawed skin tone. In order to cleanse your body in a speedy manner, you need to make use of a tried and tested colon cleanser.

Choose A Natural Cleanser

The second step to cleaning your digestive tract is by adopting a natural product. Toxins are created owing to the accumulation of harmful chemicals in a human body. If you try and remove toxins through another chemical, you would be harming your body instead of curing it. Hence, you need to choose a colon cleansing product, which is using natural ingredients.

Regulate Your Diet

Toxins get accumulated within your digestive tract because you tend to eat junk food. If you aspire to cleanse your infected colon in under 30 days, you need to include fresh vegetables, fruits, raw salads, juices and cereals in your daily diet.

Change Your Lifestyle

Sleeping late, attending late night parties and eating at odd hours, can lead to an unhealthy colon. If you aspire to cleanse your body off all the toxins, you would be required to regulate your lifestyle as well. Sleep on time, eat on time and avoid late night parties. Besides, always include a natural colon cleanser on a daily basis. Very soon, you would have a body which is free from toxins and full of energy.

Detoxify The Body Using These Tips

In order to detoxify the body, one must first clean out the digestive tract in order for the cleaning action to take place at a deeper level. Detoxifying at a deeper level is just as important as cleansing the body externally, and it can help solve a lot of health problems in the long run.

The digestive tract, including the small and large intestines, can become clogged with toxins overtime if they are not nourished with the proper foods. Once that happens, the toxins begin to leach out into the blood stream and are transferred throughout the body. As a result of this, excess weight is gained and the body is at a higher risk of developing serious diseases.

Detoxify

Detoxifying the body naturally is a way of life and can be done on a daily basis with a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Cleaning the Colon

"Colon" is just another name for the large intestine. This is where the most junk accumulates, and thus it is the place to start when doing any type of detoxification.

The concept of cleaning the colon is very simple and can be done with a change in the diet. Lot's of fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds and herbs and spices are very beneficial for cleansing the colon. What makes them so effective is the fiber that they contain. Although the body cannot absorb fiber, it nevertheless is an important part of the diet because it helps to expel the toxins from within the digestive tract.

Once the colon is cleaned, the body can begin to work on the small intestine and the rest of the body as well.

Note: When cleaning the colon, it is important that all toxic substances are avoided as much as possible. This includes processed foods, animal foods, refined sugar and other junk foods.

Rehydrate

It is very important to keep the body well hydrated during a detox. The water travels throughout the cells and picks up any debris and expels it via the sweating mechanism or in the urine. The more toxins that are present, the more fluids are necessary in order to detoxify the body.

Some of the beneficial liquids to include are herbal and spice teas, fresh fruit and vegetable juices and clean water. Fluids to avoid are those that contain sugar or caffeine, such as coffee, sodas, and energy drinks.

Juice Fast

When the body is ready, one can do a juice fast in order to further cleanse and strengthen the digestive system. One can start with a half-day or a one-day fast and work up to longer fasts that last for several weeks.

Organ Cleanses

There are also various organ cleanses that can be performed periodically in order to detoxify the body at an even deeper level. They can be performed after the colon, which is also an organ, is cleansed. Common organ cleanses include a kidney and a liver cleanse. Like the colon, these are also elimination organs, and once cleaned, can help to clean the rest of the body as well.

How To Start A Natural Detox Process - Intro to 3 Day Detox Program (Part 3)

Finally, you've reached the last part of the 3 Day Introductory series and it's great that you already are aware how your body is working along with the toxins that you encounter in life. You may probably ask yourself now, "How can I get started then?" Well, here are some simple tips that you could do to experience a home based body detox as soon as possible.

How to finally start detoxifying the body?

Detox

When you feel uncomfortable or aching, that means your body needs some rejuvenating to help revive it in its normal, healthy state. At the same time, you'll need detoxifying activities to eliminate the toxins inside you on a step by step and natural process. One recommended program to start off with is through a 3 Day detox diet at home. 3 Day detox is the minimum recommended "trial" detoxifying process by experts to prevent altering from one routine to another too fast. This also helps the body recognize the changes you put in before you go ahead onto much advanced body detox programs.

So, first step is to review your food stuff. Cut down toxins in your intake through foods containing refined sugars, alcohol, saturated fats, caffeine, and also negative vices in which foods get combined with such as liquor and cigarettes. Take note that these kinds of toxins greatly affect your immune system that helps the body to battle and without completely erasing these poisonous contents, your body gets weaker and weaker as you age which is what you're going to prevent.

Next is the use of personal toiletries such as toothpastes, mouthwashes, deodorants, shampoos, etc which contain chemicals that may or may not be harmful for your health. Thus, these things are necessary but should be used with caution since some of the chemicals can reside into your body for a long time that can seep its natural detox program.

Have that head-start 3 Day detox program

Fortunately today, there are various choices in which you can start your 3 Day detox diet and program to help sustain your body's detoxification. Programs mostly include healthy diets and breathing exercises that suit the lifestyle you wanted. Here are some of the fun examples that you could test straight for three days:

Water Fasting

As the name indicates, this detox program requires you to only consume water during the whole water fast. While the water plays important role in flushing away toxins, it simply eliminates unwanted wastes by cleaning the digestive tract down to the other organs and letting them repair themselves and regenerate. Drinking 8-10 glasses of water daily could be a great start.

Diet Change

Changing your diet is one of the ultimate rules in body detoxification. If you're always into packaged, processed foods and junk foods previously, then you must switch your diet now to fresh fruits and vegetables and also whole grains. By doing this, you'll also reduce intake of saturated fats, cholesterol and other food content that may harm your health.

Sauna

Sauna is popular all over the world and it's most effective in removing toxins from the body by letting you sweat and breathe in calm environment. It's most effective the more fat build-ups reduced while you seek these sauna packages regularly. Though for much extensive 3 Day detox results, combine saunas with nutritional supplements, good exercise and also healthy diet.

Skin Brush

As mentioned earlier, the skin is one of these vital organs playing detox in the body. So brushing your skin is a gentle yet efficient way of detoxification. While brushing is done, dead cells get removed and lymphs are stimulated. As a result, toxins are released out through the skin. To perform this 3 Day detox program, use a dry skin brush preferably made of soft vegetable bristles. Also, brush the soles of your feet in circular motion for a minute.

Yoga

Yoga stimulates oxygenation in the body's bloodstream so this also completes the list in your 3 Day detox program. You could also do the yoga for three days straight as combined with healthy lifestyle. This releases abundant energy and enhances the body's physical processes. While the various positions and postures in yoga gently massage the internal organs, your body tends to automatically excrete harmful toxins letting you activate the energy within you.

Starting up with these healthy rejuvenating 3 Day detox processes, you already are letting your body lengthen its functions to help you sustain a healthy and happy life. These are just few of the exercises but these common cleansing methods could be a great head-start. Now that you already know how both your body and what you can do can detoxify your system, consistency is important for all these activities to take effect in the long term.
